Today’s Q’s for George Clooney

October 12, 2010 5:38 PM

President Obama met today with actor George Clooney and John Prendergast, co-founder of the Enough Project, an initiative to end genocide and crimes against humanity,to talk about their recent trip to Sudan.

White House spokesman Tommy Vietor said that in their meeting “President Obama underscored the intensity of the United States’ efforts to ensure that the referendum be held on time and to urge the parties to choose the path of peace over renewed violence.”

President Obama in the meeting expressed continued support for implementing both the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) and successfully negotiating post-CPA issues, and he discussed the US’s diplomatic and development surge in the South, “the powerful multilateral signal of support for peace sent by the international community last month at the United Nations General Assembly meeting, and ongoing engagement from senior officials to maintain that international momentum.”

The president emphasized international efforts to “ensure a peaceful and timely referendum” but said "ultimate responsibility for Sudan’s future rests with its political leaders."

Afterwards, Clooney and Prendergrast spoke to reporters.

TAPPER: George, do you have any concerns about General Gration’s leadership and what do you think will happen in January if violence does break out? Do you think there is the international will to send troops into Sudan?

CLOONEY: I don’t think at this point there is any discussion in sending troops into South Sudan.  Right now we have 90 days to do this and it doesn’t cost a dime and it doesn’t cost any lives and no American troops. You know, this is not a right or left issue as you well know, I’ve worked with Sam Brownback before, we’re going to go meet with Senator Lugar in a few minutes, so the truth of the matter, at this moment, there’s an opportunity here to negotiate this. To negotiate a peace treaty is complicated and it’s difficult, and its negotiating with people you don’t necessarily like or you don’t necessarily get along with. This administration seems committed to it, and we have to focus on that right now rather than focusing on the idea of the aftermath. I’d rather, I’d rather us prevent one than focusing on the triage at the end.

PRENDERGAST: And one very impressive thing about the meeting that we just had, the President is very focused, very knowledgeable about the details, very in control about the policy. This is a breath of fresh air and we are very, it gives a chance at diplomacy, it gives a chance at peace making that didn’t exist three months ago. So I think the US being in the game and support of the African Union peace process is potentially the game changer that the Sudanese people are looking for. Now they have to follow through.

TAPPER: Do you have faith in General Gration’s leadership?

CLOONEY: I think that General Gration’s leadership. I think General Gration could use all of our help, as well. You know, remember that this is also the responsibility of the international community; we could use some of the European nations that aren’t as being tough on the government of Khartoum. You know he isn’t spending his money in Sudanese pounds; you know it’s in Euros and other forms. We need to find out where that money is and freeze it.  There’s pressures that we can put on this, on the government we in many ways in the United States have already used up you know, short of military power, and no one’s suggesting that.

NY Times Miss Manners Hints At Truth

by digby

The New York Times features an interesting story this morning about a move across teh country to remove judges by people who don't like their decisions:

After the State Supreme Court here stunned the nation by making this the first state in the heartland to allow same-sex marriage, Iowa braced for its sleepy judicial elections to turn into referendums on gay marriage.

The three Supreme Court justices on the ballot this year are indeed the targets of a well-financed campaign to oust them. But the effort has less to do with undoing same-sex marriage — which will remain even if the judges do not — than sending a broader message far beyond this state’s borders: voters can remove judges whose opinions they dislike.

Around the country, judicial elections that were designed to be as apolitical as possible are suddenly as contentious as any another race.

In Kansas, anti-abortion activists are seeking to recall a justice. In Illinois, business interests are campaigning against the chief justice after a case that removed a cap on malpractice liability, prompting him to run a television ad that opens with the declaration, “I am not a politician.” And a conservative group called Clear the Bench Colorado is citing a host of decisions in seeking to oust the full slate of justices on the ballot there, urging voters, “Be a citizen, not a subject.”

It goes on to point out that the laws many of them were using were designed to remove corrupt or incompetent judges but are now being used to send a message that judges who do not adhere to certain views will be kicked out of office.

It also points out that there is big money involved, with the campaigns being underwritten by corporate interests and wealthy Christian groups.

But they forgot to connect the dots in this story. Do you notice something that all these cases around the country have in common? Yes, I knew that you could -- they are all being waged by right wingers. This "trend" is decidedly one-sided, run by a minority faction in America who have decided that their interpretation of the laws and the constitution will be imposed upon everyone.

Far be it for me to suggest that intimidating judges and replacing ones you don't like with social conservatives might be just a little bit theocratic and surely nobody can believe thatcorporate sponsored removal campaigns are designed to make it impossible for moderate or conservative judges to compete against business friendly judges. It would be very impolite to point any of that out, which is why, I'm sure that the New York Times didn't bother to do it.

They simply left some little hints for the discerning reader to sift through:

Brian S. Brown, executive director of the National Organization for Marriage, which has spent $230,000 on television ads criticizing the Iowa judges, said he understood that removing the three judges would not change the same-sex marriage ruling. (It was a unanimous ruling by the state’s seven justices.) But Mr. Brown said he hoped the judges’ ouster would help prevent similar rulings elsewhere by making judges around the nation aware that their jobs are on the line.

“It sends a powerful message,” he said, “That if justices go outside the bounds of their oaths, if the justices go outside the bounds of the U.S. and state constitutions they’re going to be held accountable.”

Bob Vander Plaats, who made opposition to same-sex marriage a centerpiece of his unsuccessful run for governor in Iowa, is leading the ouster campaign on behalf of the political arm of the American Family Association, a conservative Christian organization based in Tupelo, Miss.

“My bigger fear isn’t about injecting politics into judicial retention elections. The bigger fear is that we don’t hold them in check,” he said, warning that gun and property rights could be at risk.

Make of that what you will dear reader. But never say that the NY Times stooped to the level of shrill bloggers who suggest that the far right might have a radical agenda. Let no one say that the old Gray Lady is anything but well mannered.

How do I make money with affiliate marketing?

I've tried and tried, but just can't seem to make it happen.

Does this sound familiar?

If it does, then you may be falling into one of the biggest traps of not being successful in affiliate marketing. Avoiding this trap is also the key to making affiliate marketing work for you.

What is it, you ask? Well, quite simply, it is staying focused and only choosing one program at a time. This sounds obvious, but when you get down to it, it is not practiced.

When you begin with affiliate marketing, it is very exciting and a bit overwhelming.

Just think, You can make money selling someone else's product without dealing with any customers or any expenses. You don't need a new product or an initial outlay on your part. You just find a product that sounds good and run with it.

So you look into these products and there are thousands of them. Chances are that you just want to make money and don't care what you promote, just as long as it adds to your bottom line. Therefore, you just go with one of the top ranked products and you think that you are guaranteed to make money. All of these programs have to be good or they wouldn't be ranked so high in Clickbank or Commission Junction or whatever program you may be using. Right?

Everyone else is making money with this product, so why can't I? Right?

Wrong!

This kind of thinking has to stop!

Everyone has different interests and different fields of expertise. What is good for the goose is not necessarily good for the gander. You must find an area that suits you!

Here is where you need to become focused. You need to first decide on a niche. Pick a subject matter that interests you. Something that you are passionate about, that you will be excited to work with, and that will drive you to keep pushing on. This should be something that you are familiar with and hopefully very knowledgeable about. It needs to be something that you enjoy and something that you are going to know how to market.

The hardest part of affiliate marketing is driving the traffic to your affiliate site.

This will be much easier if you are familiar with, and knowledgeable about the niche.

You can write articles, post on forums, reply to blogs, write newsletters and reviews, and an infinite number of other choices, as long as you know (or at least appear to know) what you are talking about.

This is the key and the most important factor to making money with affiliate products.

You need to promote the affiliate product as if you are an expert in that field, whether you are or not. The best advice would be to buy that product and learn it inside and out.

If it is indeed a good product then you will actually become an expert and promote it as your own. If you feel that you cannot do that with this product, then drop it and try a new one.

Basically, you need to go with what you know, find a good product in that field, and fly with it. Most importantly, keep with it and never give up. As long as you give it your best effort you will succeed. Failure only comes with not trying or giving up!
